Module 3 Blog

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Nelson Mandela

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead

I love these quote because I think that we as teachers are the foundation for what society will be like in the future.  I am excited for advocating about early literacy because it is the basis for learning for all children not just some.  Children get so excited to read and write that we have to be more focused on the principles of early literacy before requiring them to learn math and science etc.  As communities we need to pressure our schools to be more proactive in education and sometimes that means changing things around including the curriculum to better serve the students.

I am nervous to present my advocacy plan because I do feel very passionate about my topic and I do not want it to come off like I am angry with the school system now because I know that will upset people.  I just want them to understand that I believe this will help us all in the long run including generations to come.  I think that the most effective thing for me to do is remember that this is for the children and to benefit their future.  I have to remember to think before speaking and that it is not a race to finish talking.  Hopefully it will all go well and people will have a better understanding of early literacy and the benefits that it can provide their students and children.

I would say to others that in order for your plan to work you have to feel the passion behind it.  If you do not have that passion then find something else to advocate for within education.  I am up for learning new ideas for public speaking if anyone has any tips for me that would be great!

  1. I love your quotes. Both are so applicable to what we are doing. I couldn't agree more with education and what a small group of citizens can do. I wish I had some words of wisdom about public speaking, it is one of my biggest fears also. Just try to keep in mind that it is one of the biggest phobias out there, we are all nervous when presenting in a public forum. Just make sure that you are well prepared and know your information inside and out. I also agree with you on making sure to keep in mind to speak as normally as possible, not as if I am in a race to finish to get my point across. Great post.

  2. Public speaking is a challenge. My advice is to practice! This helps the speaker slow down as they are comfortable with the information and its content. Practice also gives you the confidence to stop and listen-really listen to feedback because since you KNOW your stuff you are comfortable with discussion and not focused on getting the information out. A discussion allows parties involved to evolve into an idea and ideas turn in to passion! Passion that could become more support for your focus!

You are going to do great!!
